LAUNDRY ROOM REVEAL

As many of you already know, we've been documenting the renovation of our new Notting Hill home on Instagram (@byheatherkane). We're finally finished and are so excited to dive into the design details of each room, including any links you may find useful.

We'll start with the laundry room, one of the smallest but most functional spaces in the flat, and home to my beloved American dryer. A non-negotiable for me this time round!

BEFORE

The laundry room in question is quite small (around 4’ wide on each side) and it's an awkward L shape, so practicality is key. The previous owners had a third bathroom in here but as we added a powder loo to the ground floor, we felt two bathrooms on the lower ground was plenty.

Previously, access was off what we call the scary room; a truly hideous dungeon-like space that we've since added a window to (game-changer) and turned into a cozy office/snug. We closed this door off and added one to the hallway, so the current door is just behind where the sink used to be.

SPACE SAVING HACK: hardware & mirrors

To optimize the space, we kept the design quite simple and focused on making everything as functional as possible. The aforementioned dryer and washing machine are stacked behind the door on the left, with one of my favorite features of all just above: a built-in drying rail. The tall thin cupboard to the left houses the ironing board, hoover, and mop. It's so handy to have all this in the same space!

The cabinet doors are right up against the wall so we opted for flat unlacquered brass hardware that sits flush with the wall when the doors are open. Anyone who knows me knows how much I love my hardware and these Chloe Alberry cupboard pulls are such a beautiful, understated, and functional feature.

The final addition in here was a large mirror (an essential in any small room if you ask me), which we got cut to size to fit around the awkwardly shaped ceiling. The interior door can be propped open by a magnet in the wall behind, which helps with general access (we all know the struggle of carrying mounds of washing to and fro), while also allowing natural light from the nearby snug window to flood in and bounce off the mirror.

SPACE SAVING HACK: café curtain/skirt

We didn't have the clearance for two sets of cabinet doors, so we opted for a curtain on this side of the room. This way we can store and easily access all our cleaning products while keeping them hidden.

The curtain fabric is a beautiful vintage cotton/silk mix from the Cloth Shop on Portobello Road - my go-to for all things fabric! It's a thick slubby material backed in cotton for extra longevity.

The brass pole is from House of Brass with concealed socket brackets.

Sink skirt inspiration

I'll be honest, sink skirts aren’t usually my thing, but it was so necessary in here given the space limitations. Fortunately, I managed to find some amazing inspiration from these designers, who proved skirts don't have to feel country and twee...
